matmat: Handmade Felted Mats from Kyoto
matmat, a project by ZÜS Felt, is dedicated to the art of handcrafting unique felt mats. Each mat is one-of-a-kind, carrying the diverse characteristics of wool sourced from sheep raised in various environments.
The length, thickness, elasticity, color, texture, and shrinkage of the fibers differ among sheep breeds. By layering and shrinking several types of wool, each with its distinct qualities, a wide range of textures and personalities emerge in the finished felt, depending on the combination and order of the layers.
These fully shrunken, durable mats are versatile companions, ready to serve in various settings – from indoor spaces to outdoor benches and camping trips. (Please avoid leaving them exposed to rain and wind for extended periods.)
Usage:
- Cushion your feet for comfort
- Transform any chair into a seat
- Create a soft, inviting space when spread on the floor
- Create a cozy spot for your pets
- Support your head or back during relaxation
- Protect your car seats
- Provide a stable, elegant base for vases or potted plants
Lightweight and easy to carry, these mats are coated with the sheep's natural oils, which repel dirt and water, making them ideal for outdoor use. Shrunk to the maximum possible level, they provide comfort when sitting on hard surfaces like concrete or rocks for extended periods. You can trust in their durability and resilience.
Outdoor uses:
- Soften harsh outdoor benches
- For your picnic experience
- Use as a seat while hiking or in the forest
- Sit on river stones
- Provide extra warmth for your lower back in a hammock
- A must-have for camping trips
The hollow structure of sheep's fibers excels at absorbing moisture, making these wool mats perfect not only for winter but also during the humid rainy season and sweat-prone summer months.
Washing Instructions: Soak the mat in lukewarm water with a wool-safe detergent for about 30 minutes. Gently squeeze and rinse, then spin for about 1 minute. Shape the mat and hang it to dry. When shaping, apply a small amount of lanolin cream to your hands and stroke the entire mat for a beautiful sheen and enhanced water and dirt repellency.
